In today’s business and leadership environment, it is more important than ever to have leadership characteristics that build and maintain followership. Leaders face more challenges than ever before coming from every angle. With social media, blogging, YouTube and a wide variety of other platforms, leaders can be exploited. Their actions can be taken out of context, and they can be challenged in a number of ways.

Hi Friends! Leadership is not easy and there is a lot you can be afraid of! In this episode, I am going to talk about some of the fears we can have in leadership and how we can have courage to overcome them.

Fears As a Leader

It seems like most, if not all, people have something they really fear. Fears can be very real at times. They can cause people to freeze up and even tremble. Other times, fear keeps people from moving forward towards their goals.

As a leader, it can be easy to let fear get a hold of you. There are many things to fear as a leader. Some of those fears may include:

Fear of rejection
Fear of inadequacy
Fear of the unknown
Fear of underperformance
Fear of lack of control

It is much easier said than done, but when you are the leader, you cannot let fear take control of you. If you let fear have a hold on you, you will become an ineffective leader. Hi friends! Last week I shared the story of Abraham Lincoln and how he was resilient to overcome the challenges that he faced in life. Each challenge helped him on his journey to becoming the President of the United States and one of the most influential people in history.

5 Stories of Resilience

This week I would like to continue that theme. In this episode, I am going to share five stories of resilience. Each of these stories give me hope and help me have the courage to get back up when the going gets tough.

As you listen to these stories, some of these stories are shared in the own words of those who experienced the challenges and got back up. I used clips from those people and will include links to their stories in the show notes. Be sure to check them out!

1. Kerri Strug’s Olympic Moment

Back in 1992 at the summer Olympics, the USA gymnastics team was fighting for the gold medal. On that team was a young woman named Kerri Strug. Well, that summer, USA only took home the bronze. In fact, the USA never had yet received the gold medal for the Team-All-Around event. They were determined to beat Russia and Romania in the next Olympic games.

Top 10 Causes of Leadership Failure

Alright, leaders and businesses fail due to a number of reasons, but there are some common contributing factors. Today, I am going to share the Top 10 Causes of Leadership Failure that I gathered from fellow leaders, friends, credible leadership websites, and my own experiences.

10. Talk More Than Listen

At number 10, leadership fails when leaders talk more than they listen. Have you ever been around someone that talked and talked and talked some more? That person seems to have a story for every situation, experience, or background that is discussed, AND they tell everyone what they know and how they feel about everything.

At first this starts out as a small annoyance, but it can eventually become a big frustration. When leaders talk more than they listen, their followers often disconnect from them and become less responsive to their recommendations.

Additionally, when leaders don’t listen to others, they fail to learn what they don’t know. This creates blinds spots because they can’t learn what they don’t know.

9. Have All the Answers or They are a Know-It-All

Number nine, leaders fail when they have all the answers and are a know-it-all. Nobody wants to be around people that think they know everything. Know-it-alls seem to have an answer for everything and they are always right, even if they are not right. That know-it-all mentality is very annoying and even a put-off to those they lead.

I remember someone like that when I was in high school. I would tell him about everything I could think of that he shouldn’t know about, and he magically knew more than me about it.
