Connections Are King

Within the blogging world, there is a common saying that, “Content is King!” I believe, however, that this statement is not entirely true. Content is VERY important, but CONNECTIONS are King. You can have great content, but if you don’t have anyone coming to your website, the content will not be seen. This follows the old adage that it is not about what you know but who you know.

So why do I feel connections are king?

Connections are king because they consume and spread your content.  When I write a post on Leadership Done Right it can do really well or really poorly. If I share it with my friends, they read it and share it with their friends. If, however, I write a post and don’t share it with anyone, it usually doesn’t do well.  To give you an example, the posts that I share with my network get 90% more views than those that I just write and don’t share on my social networks.  Why is that? It is because once a post is shared, others share and spread the word about my post as well.

Connections are king because they give you recommendations and you listen. We hear ads and recommendations for all sorts of products, websites, etc. on the radio, TV, web, and through other forms of media.  How often do you take those recommendations? Well in most cases, you are probably slow to listen to them because you know they are just trying to sell you something. Blog Writing For a Busy Audience

Blog writing is a very common topic on the internet.  Many people have done well financially by starting a blog for themselves, their company, or a product they sell.  So what does it take to do well at blog writing?  What does it take to keep people reading your blog posts?  In a world with leaders blogging about leadership and other topics on a regular basis, how do you keep your blog relevant?  I have seen three suggestions to keep your blog relevant and help you to be successful at blog writing.

First, write great content!

The first key to successful blog writing is to produce great content.  Ask yourself the questions, “Of all the blogs out there, why does my blog stand out?  What is my niche?  How do I keep people coming back to read more?”  By asking these questions you will be able to define your target niche and target audience.  From there, your blog writing can be directed towards that specific audience so your content is very relevant to their needs.  Your content is king in getting people to come to your blog regularly.  When blog writing, it is important that you understand the topics you write about.

The Impact Of Specialty Blogs

Have you heard about the impact of specialty blogs? Did you hear the story about the stay-at-home mom that became a millionaire? How did she do it? She did it by creating a specialty blog. She and her husband were struggling to make ends meet, so she started to blog about her situation. The purpose of her blog was to show everyone what she and her family were going through and how they were trying to save money, be more frugal, and overcome their situation.

As she wrote, she gained more and more followers. She gained credibility as a money saving expert as she saved money and became financially stable. Once she gained her expert status, major television networks had her to speak on their shows to teach people how to overcome their financial instability. They paid her big money for the speaking arrangements. From there, she started her own in-home business that focused on helping people gain financial stability.

I learned about this story through reading the book ME 2.0 by Dan Schawbel.  Many people write specialty blogs and each person has the ability to start their own specialty blog. If you start a specialty blog and post regularly, you will gain a following and could be the next millionaire!

Five Of My Favorite Leadership Bloggers

I follow many other leadership blogs on a regular basis and have my favorite leadership bloggers. As I read the posts, I learn a lot about how to be a better leader.  The posts help me learn leadership techniques I can use to improve my skills and abilities.  They also show me techniques that have worked, as well as, those that haven’t.

So you are probably asking yourself, “What bloggers do you follow regularly?”  Because I follow too many bloggers to share on one post, I will just start with five in this post.  I am not going to name them in any particular order.

Bret L. Simmons (PhD) – Positive Organizational Behavior

Bret’s About me page says, “I am passionate about leadership and management.  My purpose is “to change your mind about the value of partnering with others to build healthy, responsible organizations where everyone can thrive.” I try to keep everything I do — training, speaking, teaching, research — consistent with my purpose.”

Bret does a great job showing how leadership principles taught in the classroom apply to real life. He regularly explains how leaders can and should do a better job to make their organizations more effective.  He also spends a lot of time focusing on everyday interactions that have a significant impact on the level of customer satisfaction.  As he addresses them, he points out the good things that have happened as well as the bad things.  From there, he analyzes what they did right and what they did wrong. As Beth pointed out, leaders must focus on their own improvement on a regular basis.  They must also focus on the development of those they lead.  As they train those they lead, they improve their team and the skills of their group.  The training helps their team be more successful because it will increase the overall skills.  Many leaders have a fear that training their followers is bad because it will make their followers replace them as the leader.  In reality, the opposite is more often the truth; the leaders that train their followers to be successful end up being more successful themselves.  By helping others succeed, they help themselves to move up the ladder because people see them as effective leaders.
