This Week’s Top 5 Leadership Posts

Each week I write a post about the top five leadership posts I find because each blogger has their own niche.  In the leadership world there are many very successful bloggers that blog on a daily or weekly basis.  They have developed a prominence in their particular area of expertise.

I write my own blog about leadership, in addition to following blogs from others about leadership.  Since I review leadership blogs on a weekly basis, I decided to highlight five leadership blog posts that discuss relevant leadership topics. Each of the bloggers is an independent blogger that doesn’t represent a company or other organization.

The Difference Between Management And Leadership by Bret L. Simmons

In the new chapter to the paperback edition of his book, Good Boss, Bad Boss, Bob Sutton asserts that there is a difference between management and leadership, but focusing on it is dangerous (p, 263). He concurs as I do with Warren Bennis that “managers are people who do things right and leaders are people who do the right thing.” Bob thinks this distinction is accurate; however, focusing on it is dangerous.

Brandon’s Thoughts
This is a great blog that explains some of the differences between managers and leaders.  Leaders need to look at the big picture of the organization and identify the direction they want the organization to go, while at the same time maintaining humility and the ability to do the important core roles and responsibilities of the company in their day to day roles.  Leaders must also pursue education through all facets of their career no matter what their current responsibilities are. The Power of Blogging in Leadership!

To be a good leader, you must have conviction in what you want to do and the stance you take on different issues. In many cases, beginning leaders don’t have strong convictions because they are new to leadership.  Those convictions develop over time through trial and error, or as they study examples from other leaders.

Writing down your thoughts can also be very beneficial in the development of your convictions. A blog is a perfect platform for this. The following video helps explain the power of blogging in leadership when developing your convictions.

As you blog, you will develop your own thoughts on how to handle different situations. Blogging will force you to take a stance on the topics you write about. Doesn’t Everyone Want to Be Successful?

Over the last little while I have watched a lot of what has been going on in the republican primary elections. Each candidate has their own set of strengths and weaknesses. With this election, as is common with every other election, each candidate focuses on reasons why he/she is the best candidate for the position.Doesn’t Everyone Want to Be Successful?

One thing most candidates agree on is that America has always been known as a country where people come because they want to be successful. With that in mind, why are Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum saying that Mitt Romney is less qualified to be President of the United States because he was successful?

Great leadership is carried out when the leader brings out the best in people. All other things equal, the leader helps the entire group, company, or organization to be successful.

Leadership Lessons From the Iowa Caucus

As the Iowa caucus came to a close the results were so close that only eight votes separated the top two candidates.  It was the closest presidential GOP contest in U.S. history and Mitt Romney came out as the winner.  The close finish made me ask questions about what factors led to the resulting eight vote difference.  Because it is politics, there were many factors that led to a close finish, but I am going to look at just a few that relate to leadership.

To understand the leadership implications, we must first look at the background.  In 2008, Mitt Romney was the runner-up in the Iowa republican caucus.  Since then, he has maintained a high level of support with relatively minimal effort.  Because of this support, he did a limited amount of campaigning until the last three weeks prior to the caucus.  On the other hand, Rick Santorum spent a lot of time and effort doing door-to-door campaigning.  Santorum had a lot of people on the ground representing him.   [Read more…] about Leadership Lessons From the Iowa Caucus

Three Lessons Learned From a Great Leader

In 2001, I lived in Cypress Hills, NY. During that time, I was a full-time volunteer service missionary in a two year program. As a service missionary, I was given a partner that I worked with all the time. Each missionary partnership was part of a district which was composed of four to eight service missionaries.

Two to three districts were grouped together to form a zone, and there were 16 zones within the mission. The leader over the whole mission was called the mission president. For my area the mission president was Larry Spackman. He was a very successful businessman from Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

There were also leaders amongst the missionaries. The leaders were responsible for either a district or zone of missionaries. The leader’s responsibility was to motivate and encourage the other missionaries. In addition, the leader had to make sure the missionaries were following the standards of missionary conduct.

In the case study, Specialty Medical Chemicals, there are some significant systemic problems. There were three main areas of problems that were occurring in the case. The three areas were: the management approach taken by CEO Carl Burke, the response of the existing vice presidents, and the system as a whole.

When Carl Burke became the CEO, he was an outsider to the company. He first took the approach of, “I am just going to ride the wave for a little while and see where it takes me before I make any drastic changes.” As he did this, he found that the company wasn’t performing as he felt it should. Because he had spent his entire career with a single company, his overall outlook was very narrow-minded. He felt that all companies should operate the same way that he was used to operating at Merck.
