Here Comes the Baby… Not Yet!

Many of you know that my wife is currently pregnant with our fourth child. My wife and I and our kids are very excited for the new addition to our family.

We are at the point right now where she is due any day. We live about 90 miles away from the hospital which is about an hour and a half drive once she starts labor. So, once she starts labor we have to head to the hospital so that we get there in time.

For any of you that have children, you probably remember the excitement and uncertainty that comes as you wait for the baby to come into the world. It is a fun time but also challenging with anxiety. We know the baby will come soon, but we don’t know when.

We are both planners that like to schedule everything. We plan our days, weeks, and months in advance both at work and at home. That makes the uncertainty all the more fun and challenging. To ease the uncertainty, we have taken several steps to prepare for the birth.

Types of Uncertainty

Now, since my wife is healthy and all the pregnancy health assessments and baby are healthy, we don’t have big concerns about birth defects or the health of my wife. Our uncertainty is mostly due to the timing of the baby’s birth. That uncertainty is exciting and even minimal when compared to the uncertainty that others go through. Many people have to deal with the uncertainly of illness, potential job-loss, natural disasters, or family afflictions. When change happens, many people would rather resist change than adapt to the new policies, procedures, or strategies. Instead, they do the same as always, only harder. They convince themselves that they are working hard so they are doing great. Actually, this is just a tactic to resist change.

This approach may work for a short time, but it is not a feasible long-term solution to adjust to change. If you continue to work the same as always, only harder RATHER than adapt to change, it just leads to burnout, pain, frustration, and/or anger for yourself and those around you.

Resisting Change Didn’t Work for Me

Some time back, I went through a change where I got a new boss. My new boss and I didn’t always see eye to eye. As I saw it, he came in and began changing everything without first figuring out what was currently being done and why. This rubbed me the wrong way so I decided to resist change. I tried to do everything I knew how to do, but faster than I had done it in the past. I worked as hard as I possibly could.

It didn’t take long for me to get very worn out. This approach didn’t help me to see eye to eye more with my new boss and it didn’t lead to my success. It just made me frustrated, annoyed, and angry because things weren’t going my way.

After taking this approach for a little while, I realized I would be much better off if I accepted the changes he proposed and accepted him as my new boss. I had a complete mind shift. Instead of fighting the change, I did everything I could to make him my ally by making myself a member of his team. I started doing my best to understand him and his methods.

I also did all I could to understand how he wanted things done and then did them according to his way. By adjusting my approach, I was much happier at the end of each day and life was easier. 4 Tips to Build Leadership Credibility

By Brandon W. Jones on August 30, 2017 0

When you are a leader it is really important to have leadership credibility. When you have leadership credibility, those you lead will follow you to the ends of the earth because they trust you, your decisions and your ability to lead.

This credibility is very hard to gain. Leaders constantly face the challenge of gaining leadership credibility from their followers. Additionally, their followers try to test their leader’s leadership credibility. Followers want to know if their leaders are really qualified to be their leader. They also want to be sure that the leader knows what they are talking about. [Read more…] about 4 Tips to Build Leadership Credibility

Walt Disney

There are few who have had as enormous an impact on our culture and entertainment as Walt Disney. As co-creator of Mickey Mouse he helped to create the most popular and well-known cartoon character in the world. As the founder of Walt Disney Studios, he was an artist who changed animation and film-making forever and has been delighting and inspiring audiences for nearly 100 years. And, of course, when he brought us Disneyland he created a place unlike any other, one that still thrills the imaginations of children and adults today.

But the road to this kind of success and influence wasn’t easy, and it couldn’t have happened without Disney’s ceaseless hard work and unwavering belief in his dreams. Disney faced numerous obstacles—he was put to work at just nine years old, had only an eighth-grade education and almost no formal training in art, and suffered multiple business setbacks. However, he saw these not as failings but as leadership adversity that helped to make him the great visionary and businessman he became. http://www.learningliftoff.com/overcoming-obstacles-hard-work-and-persistence-paid-off-for-walt-disney/#.WaNDkq3MyRs

What is Your Advice for New Leaders?

By Brandon W. Jones on August 17, 2017 0

Advice for New Leaders

New leaders go through a wide range of emotions. There’s excitement about the new opportunities, anxiety about making a mark, and confidence in the skills that brought them to where they are. With all this excitement, they also often lack knowledge and experience. There’s nothing wrong with that. The way to overcome those feelings is to seek advice. Along those lines, I was recently asked, “What is your advice for new leaders?”

Advice for New Leaders

To answer this question, I go back to when I was a new leader. As a new leader, I had many of those feelings going through my head. I felt excited, overwhelmed, nervous, and a wide range of other emotions. Those feelings were and are normal and expected.

As a new leader, I was in a position where I had a lot of control over things that I didn’t have control over in the past. Once I got over the initial range of emotions, I realized I had to get to work. So let’s answer the question… What is my advice for new leaders? I have three pieces of advice. Apollo 13

Apollo 13 was the seventh manned mission in the Apollo space program and the third intended to land on the Moon. The craft was launched on April 11, 1970, at 1:13 PM CST from the Kennedy Space Center, Florida, but the lunar landing was aborted after an oxygen tank exploded two days later, crippling the Service Module (SM) upon which the Command Module (CM) had depended.
