10 Reasons Why Leaders Fail

Alright, now we’ll discuss the 10 Reasons Why Leaders Fail. I really like learning why others failed, so I don’t have to make the same mistakes myself. So let’s consider these 10 reasons with that mindset. Unlike last week, these are not in any particular order.

1. Poor Leadership Approach

Number one, leaders fail when they have a poor leadership approach. This can be manifest in many ways.

One way is that leaders sometimes use fear tactics. They try to coerce people through intimidation, manipulation, or overbearance. The whole point being to scare people into doing what they want.

Another poor leadership approach is to become a leader strictly to gain power over others. If you are leading just for power, you are probably not leading the right way.

And one final poor leadership approach is to lead with no confidence, rudeness, insincerity, or just flat out in a way that you show everyone you don’t know what you are doing. Top 5 Challenges New Leaders Face in the Corporate World

Alright, so let’s talk about challenges new leaders face in the corporate world. Before we get into the five challenges, I want to explain how I arrived at these five challenges. I got these challenges from the feedback I have received from listeners like you, a variety of searches on Google and from my own leadership experiences. As I put the list together, I found there were many points and angles but the majority fell into these five categories.

1. The Expectation to Know and Be Everything

The first big challenge new leaders face is the internal expectation to know and be everything. I say internal because it often isn’t an expectation set by others, but rather an expectation that we have for ourselves. That got me thinking about where that expectation comes from… I think we add that pressure on our selves because we want to prove ourselves, make our mark, and be the leader we always wished we had. We also give ourselves that expectation because we expect to be better than our previous leaders. We forget, however, that it took time for them to get to where they are. Not only that, he is a pioneering advocate for the twenty-first century economy, disrupting society’s most rigid institutions and beliefs. His economic theories explore the societal and economic shifts being catalyzed by corporations as a result of technology, corporate personhood, and evolving human cognition.

Podcast Episode #37 — Meaningful and Deep Relationships Lead to Success with Patrick GreenOur guest today is a self described “regular guy” who grew up in a broken home, and bounced back and forth between parents who both had financial difficulties. At the age of eleven his father, with whom he was living at the time, filed for bankruptcy, and the home in which they lived was lost to foreclosure. His experiences led to him writing the book “The Millionaire Journey: A Guide for Anyone to Reach Financial Freedom”.

Educational and Professional Background

Our guest went on to earn a bachelor’s degree and an MBA from Georgia State University. Since that time, he has held a variety of positions in management and administration in health care systems. Some of those positions have included Director of Business Operations, Chief Executive Officer, Executive Director of Heart and Vascular, and a Board Member. On the side he also provides medical consulting for MPACT Consulting.

He was the director of a community service organization, then held back to back roles as the department director for Community Health Care. From there, he became the CISD Team Administrator at Western Virginia EMS Council. Currently, in addition to roles and responsibilities as Provanedge, he is also a Non Executive Director for Kester Bottling Company.

He graduated from The College of William and Mary with a doctorate degree in Higher Education and received his Master’s degree in divinity from Emory University. He took his education very seriously and earned the honors of Summa Cum Laude and Magna Cum Laude respectively.

Lead for Transformation

Richard explained that the key to his background is that his goal is always to lead for transformation. “We mature throughout life. I’m not saying that any role I’ve had previously was less mature than the one I’m doing now. He has been in private practice since 1985 working with organizations in the U.S., Canada, Caribbean, Asia and the EU. He was formerly a quality professional in TRW’s automotive sector.

He was elected Fellow of the American Society for Quality and holds degrees in technology, business, and education, and completed doctoral coursework in applied management and decision sciences.

Duke has served as an adjunct university faculty member teaching statistics and management research. He is also a graduate of the international program in the Gestalt approach to organization and system development.

Duke the Author

He is the author of three books and more than 60 articles on quality management topics, and is a frequent speaker for professional and trade audiences.

Seminars

He conducts seminars for a variety of professional societies, training organizations and universities, and has served as an examiner for the Tennessee Performance Excellence award. He has also worked as a volunteer SCORE counselor to small business.

My Connection To Duke

I had the privilege of attending one of his classes on root cause analysis and it was evident that he is very talented, knowledgeable, and a leader in his field. Our guest today is Duke Okes. Duke, welcome to the show!

Leadership is Influence

Duke’s lifelong desire has always been to find out how things work. He accomplishes that by studying, reading, and learning. “I am always fascinated with learning. Always doing this since I was a kid. I’ve been taking things apart, trying to figure out how things work. Obviously when you get into leadership it’s more complex, because people are not nearly as predictable as the laws of physics.”
