To Manage Or Lead: That Is The Big Question

By Brandon W. Jones on November 17, 2017 0

To Manage Or Lead: That Is The Big Question

To manage or lead… that is the big question. This is a guest post by Alex Williams.

Leadership and management are complementary and inseparable skills, but they cannot be used interchangeably. When promoted to a project manager, you don’t automatically become a leader. Every good leader must learn to manage both their teams and projects.

To Manage or Lead?

Here are some of the most significant differences between management and leadership.

1. Leaders Pull, Managers Push

Managing people is a task-oriented and highly rational process. It focuses on events, processes, and calculations. Managers focus on current setting and control situations to achieve or exceed certain short-term goals.

What Do Managers Do?

Managers resort to the “push” principle. They “allocate resources,” “estimate effort,” and “calculate durations” regularly. They assign tasks, provide necessary guidance, and monitor and assess their employees’ performance constantly. Most importantly, managers have authority over their employees and usually provide work direction.

Employees report progress to managers and, in turn, earn a salary for doing their job. Managers follow the “push” principle by pushing work, projects, etc. to their employees.

How do Leaders Lead?

Leadership, on the other hand, is people-oriented. Leaders are different from managers because of their high levels of emotional intelligence. Namely, good leaders don’t necessarily focus on their employees’ skills and performance. Instead, they focus on their behaviors, interests, and attitudes.

Apart from being authoritative, leaders inspire. They contextualize ideas and encourage team members to look at the big picture. Leaders also motivate people to follow their vision and become part of something bigger.

They trust their employees and believe they are competent enough to make smart decisions on their own. Leaders motivate people using the “pull” approach, instead of pushing them.

2. Leaders Innovate, Managers Use Proven Patterns

“Innovation distinguishes between a leader and a follower,” ~Steve Jobs

This statement is the backbone of effective leadership. Leaders are authentic, self-aware, and decisive. They constantly inspire change.

While everything around them is working like clockwork, leaders seek a better way forward. They constantly seek learning and acquire new skills. Most importantly, they’re comfortable in their own shoes and stand their ground. They make difficult decisions even if they know they’ll be criticized. Leadership Through Influence and Persuasion

Leadership is not a one and done situation. “When I first started in leadership I assumed that you tell people what to do and they just do it. That sounds nice, but real leadership is not a position. Real leadership is influence and persuasion. People are going to get off track. That’s the reality of it. A true leader can take people that are off track and guide them back on track through influence and persuasion.”

In the simplest form, if you say to someone, “I want you to put that box into that corner.” When you say, “that box” they could think it’s the box on the left or the box on the right. Also, when you say, “that corner,” they could think it’s the corner on the right or the left. You can’t automatically think that people are going to view things from your own perspective. They may have a totally different world view than you.

Think of all the complexity with a task more complicated than “take this box and put it over there”. There are so many ways that people can decipher, so you have to put all that into consideration. Lead others through influence and persuasion so they can go down the right path. [Read more…] about Podcast Episode #24 — Leadership Through Influence and Persuasion with Jeremy Jones

How To Develop Leadership Empathy

By Brandon W. Jones on October 6, 2017 0

How To Develop Leadership Empathy

Have you ever wanted to obtain empathy? People have asked me on multiple occasions, “How can I obtain leadership empathy?” This is a great question, so let’s talk about leadership empathy.

What is Leadership Empathy?

Before developing leadership empathy, one must understand what it means to have empathy. Here’s a few dictionary definitions of empathy:

  • The ability to understand and share the feelings of another. (Google)
  • the action of understanding, being aware of, being sensitive to, and vicariously experiencing the feelings, thoughts, and experience of another of either the past or present without having the feelings, thoughts, and experience fully communicated in an objectively explicit manner; (Merriam-Webster)
  • Empathy is the capacity to understand or feel what another person is experiencing from within the other person’s frame of reference, i.e., the capacity to place oneself in another’s position. (Wikipedia)

When you have empathy, you can understand, relate to, and feel what others are feeling as if you were in their shoes.

How Does Empathy Relate to Leadership Empathy?

In leadership, you lead others. Those you lead have many things going on in their lives. They go through challenges, trials, and other difficulties.

When one has leadership empathy, they feel for those they lead. They pay close attention to the feelings and thoughts of those they lead. As they are in-tune with others, they change their behavior to help those they lead in the best way for them. [Read more…] about How To Develop Leadership Empathy

5 B’s of Leadership Organization – Are You Organized?

By Brandon W. Jones on September 6, 2017 1

5 B’s of Leadership Organization

To be a good leader, it is very important to follow the five B’s of leadership organization.

This can be challenging because in most cases leaders have many responsibilities they must constantly balance to be effective in what they do. It can be very easy to become very organized in your approach to one responsibility, while letting others gradually get less organized.

5 B’s of Leadership Organization

5 B’s of Leadership Organization

The five B’s of leadership organization will help you as a leader to focus your energy so that you can stay organized and maintain balance in your life.

1. Be organized In your communication.

As a leader, you must communicate with others regularly. That communication is done in many forms, for example public speaking, email, letters, and meetings. To be organized in your communication means that you have a consistent message that goes out to everyone. To be organized, you are also direct in the message that you convey.

Have you ever worked for someone that would tell you one thing in front of your coworkers and then something different in front of your boss or other departments? Isn’t that frustrating? A leader that is organized in their communication, maintains their integrity by keeping the same message on all fronts. When you, as a leader, are organized in your communication, you gain the trust and respect of those you lead and they are more willing to follow you.
