Top 5 Challenges New Leaders Face in the Corporate World

Alright, so let’s talk about challenges new leaders face in the corporate world. Before we get into the five challenges, I want to explain how I arrived at these five challenges. I got these challenges from the feedback I have received from listeners like you, a variety of searches on Google and from my own leadership experiences. As I put the list together, I found there were many points and angles but the majority fell into these five categories.

1. The Expectation to Know and Be Everything

The first big challenge new leaders face is the internal expectation to know and be everything. I say internal because it often isn’t an expectation set by others, but rather an expectation that we have for ourselves. That got me thinking about where that expectation comes from… I think we add that pressure on our selves because we want to prove ourselves, make our mark, and be the leader we always wished we had. We also give ourselves that expectation because we expect to be better than our previous leaders. We forget, however, that it took time for them to get to where they are. Alright, let’s get started!

One of my favorite hobbies is mountain biking. It is challenging, fun, and really good exercise. When I mountain bike, there are many types of trails. Some are technical with lots of obstacles, rocks, and other things I need to go over or around while others are wide open and flow. There is also a wide variety of trails in between.

Regardless of the trail type, there’s one thing in common for most trails. When I ride a trail, I must pick the line I will ride and stick to it. When I do that, I am able to avoid ruts, trenches, boulders, fallen trees, cliffs and a wide variety of other obstacles. As I follow through on my chosen line, I am able to avoid danger.

I have ridden some trails that were difficult and even scary. When riding those paths, there’s a tendency to want to change my line and take a different line. Most of the time, that is a bad idea and leads to other problems. I have gotten stuck in a path, flipped over my handle bars and gotten in other small wrecks. So why does that happen in the first place? Because I am not following through with the plan and sticking to my line. Our guest today is originally from Tucson, Arizona. As a young man he dabbled in filmmaking and graphic art. It wasn’t until later, in his career at Southwest Gas, that he saw Organizational Development as the route he wanted to pursue. At that time with Southwest Gas he held a PHR (Professional in Human Resources) from the Society for Human Resource Management.

The Jump into Organizational Development

His first couple of years in OD was spent traveling around the country acquiring certifications. He received certifications to train everything from typological tools, such as Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, to Situational Leadership, Kepner-Tregoe and half a dozen Franklin Covey courses and more. Next week, he will be on to his 19th certification in Change Management with Prosci.

Early Retirement

Patrick took early retirement from Southwest Gas to accomplish life goals. He lived for a short while in the South of France and continues to explore various countries that fascinate him. 1. Get Clear About Your Goals

If you are anything like me, there’s probably been a time or two where you had a lot on your mind and it was hard to sort it all out. You may have had leaders wanting you to do one thing while others were encouraging you to do something completely different. In cases like these coaching is invaluable. Your coach can help you determine what’s really important to you and help you stay focused on that. [Read more…] about Podcast Episode #40 — 10 Reasons Why You Need to Hire a Coach!
